Edinburgh university's musical theatre society
Founded in 1989, Edinburgh University Footlights is a student-run musical theatre group that annually produces one of the largest scale production of the University's theatrical calendar and a multi-talented showchoir. Over the years, Footlights has gone from strength to strength, with The Edinburgh Evening News dubbing the society "one of the most respected theatre groups in Britain". Each year, Footlights strives to achieve its core values of professionalism, being welcoming and providing a safe and enjoyable creative space for its members. In the words of The Edinburgh Guide (2018), Footlights truly provides "professional productions at an amateur price".
🏆 EUSA Most Sociable Society (2016) 🏆 EUSA Best Event (2013)
Footlights aims to give its entire cast and crew as professional an experience as possible while providing an accessible and affordable performance for the student body as well as the Edinburgh community at large. Footlights' founders identified a gap in the creative output of student theatre at Edinburgh University and a need for a society specifically geared towards performing modern, full scale musicals, as well as providing a creative outlet for those passionate about performing and theatre through our Showchoir. The society provides an excellent ground for not only talented performers to work on, but also those who are more inclined toward the technical aspects of the show, band and much more.
how to join
If you are interested in joining us, we hold one set of auditions for The Show and Showchoir at the beginning of each academic year during Fresher's week. If you are successful you will receive a callback and then who knows, maybe YOU could be the star of our next show!
Each academic year, the society sets out to produce a musical of only the highest quality. In recent years, the society has continued to achieve striking levels of professionalism throughout all levels of these productions, reflected in hugely successful productions of hit musicals including 'Anything Goes', 'A Chorus Line', 'West Side Story', 'In The Heights', 'Rent', and 'Guys and Dolls' , 'Urinetown' and 'Fame'.
The society's greatest initial artistic success was in its 1994 production of 'Moby Dick'; the only amateur performance of the musical, and licensed by Cameron Mackintosh himself as well as performing the Scottish debut of 'In the Heights'. The Show this year will be the smash hit musical '9 to 5'.
Showchoir is an exciting performance group formed in 2011 which has gone from strength to strength ever since. The choir performs at a number of events throughout the year both in and outside the University. Showchoir strives for a high standard of performance, with exciting challenges and diversity in singing and movement whilst not restricting performers to one show, genre or time period. This year Showchoir presents 'Seven', an interpretation and repurposing of the deadly sins.
Following the success of "West-End Nights" in 2016, The Showchoir's production of "A Step In Time", was a five-star huge sell-out success. Our most recent production of 'Encore' was our most ambitious show yet and was critically acclaimed for its exciting technical aspects, ambitious choreography and impressive vocal arrangements.
