WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
After the huge success of Fame last year, EU Footlights returns with the love rock musical HAIR.
Stepping away from the more traditional musical theatre of previous years, including West Side Story (2000) and Crazy For You (2001), we chose this show for its fantastic music and rather interesting content. It was a very popular and controversial musical when it first appeared on Broadway in 1968, many parents of cast members will I'm sure be fans and it will take them back to the good old 60s; it's also given us all a glimpse as to what life was like for our Mums & Dads!
We envisaged that the sex, drugs and rock and roll nature of the show would draw in many students and residents of Edinburgh, ensuring another success. EU Footlights returns to the George Square Theatre again, with its large capacity and perfect location.
It has proved to be a challenging musical, which the cast and production team have found immensely exciting and rewarding to work on (the naked scene and musical numbers such as 'Sodomy' have meant there was never a dull moment in rehearsals)!
EU Footlights suffered money problems after being forced to withdraw from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this summer, but the committee, cast and production team have worked hard on gaining sponsorship, and ensuring this show is just as good as the last.
Finally, I would like to thank everyone for their hard work and commitment.
Enjoy the show... let you HAIR down!
Vicky
Savage
President
While capturing that spirit of the 60's, EU Footlights have awakened HAIR from its bell bottomed, tie-dyed time capsule to bring its message of freedom, peace and love bang up to date. This isn't your average musical. We've turned HAIR upside down, injected it with a new lease of life and added an experimental edge; the hills won't be alive with the sound of music, tap dancing has been officially banned and the cheesy smiles have been wiped from the cast's faces (well nearly). This show's different, a whole lot different. Closer to a concert, it's a series of award winning, number one selling songs tied together with a creative plot giving an insight into the lives of the flower children of the 60's. An unforgettable mix of rock festival, musical and theatre combining the more traditional staging with physical theatre stylised set, contemporary choreography and big colourful flashing lights (sorry, I get excited about these things).
'So what is HAIR?' I hear you ask. Here's a bit of HAIR history to help you out: Introduced on Broadway in 1968, HAIR became a symbol of the cultural revolution that changed the rules by bringing rock music and the hippie movement to the stage. HAIR captured the experimental atmosphere of the times and became a forum of struggle between tradition and change. Attempts were made to censor the shows content and even ban it all together. Twice HAIR went to the US Supreme Court fighting for the freedom it was celebrating and signalled a new age as the courts upheld the shows right to freedom of speech.
As the musical deals with the struggling youth movement of the 60's it seemed only appropriate that a student company like EU Footlights should take it on board. It comes at an appropriate time too; with recent terrorist attacks and the imposing threat of war in today's society, the protests and Vietnam war scenes within the show send an ever more powerful message. It's not all doom and gloom though, there's the obligatory love scene, some bare flesh and a bit of a sting in the tail, so there's plenty to enjoy. Our aim has been for you to leave with a smile on your face and a thought or two in your head, so I can only sit at the back of the auditorium with my notebook, director's chair, beret, black scarf and about 4000 cigarettes, hoping that's what we've done.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHOREOGRAPHER
The Psychedelic hippie movement of the 60s was so profound for its time that only today modern society seems to match the way it worked. In terms of dance, while the 'normal' peer groups were twisting in boy-girl couples at the local 'hop', the hippies were 'bumping-and-grinding' with everyone and anyone in the park. In HAIR, I have taken the essence of the 60s and fused it with modern spirital dancing, namely Hindi, to create this pseudo-hippy style with a contempory edge. The result is a glorious dance off between John Water's 'Hairspray' and 'Bollywood'.
We would like to thank each and everyone of you for taking part in tonight's protest. I know half of you are only here to see a bit of boob and although you might get a glimpse there's more to this protest than that! There is... Honest! Tonight we are planning a 'sit in'. We want YOU to join us. For about an hour and a half WE WILL NOT BE MOVED as we take over this theatre. Sit in your chairs and don't move, no matter what anyone says (except for about 15 minutes in the middle). If you are worried about getting bored there is no need. We have arranged entertainment for you so turn your heads stageward and let the protest begin!

Rob
Dawson
- Director
Rob has been involved in EU Footlights for what seems like 57 years. He
can usually be found onstage acting and dancing for everything from Edinburgh
Fringe to the National Student Drama Festival. HAIR is the first musical
Rob has directed but having choreographed professionally he is no stranger
to shouting at people and pretending to be important. He has taken a very
'method' approach to directing this show encouraging the cast to get stoned
at every opportunity. If you would like to ask him any questions, he can
be found crying at the back as this is his last year with EU Footlights
and he will miss them all as if they were his own.
Vicky
Savaqe
- Musical Director
Vicky is in her third year at Edinburgh, studying music and is the University
Organ Scholar. She is the organist at St. Michael and All Saints Church,
Tollcross and holds an ATCL diploma in piano accompanying. She has recently
been accepted to work for The Council of Music in Hospitals. This is Vicky's
second year as Musical Director for EU Footlights, after the huge success
of last year's production Fame, and she would describe this years
experience as something closely relating to Sodomy!
Chris
Wilson
- Choreographer
This is Chris' 4th EU Footlights production, and he's not even a student
anymore. After gaduating in July 2002 with a degree in Clinical Anatomy,
Chris naturally wants to be an actor... So in the meantime does choreography
and assists in the management of one of Edinburgh's style bars - see the
link? Umm... An experienced performer, Chris has been in many productions
including 4 very successful Fringe shows, the most recent being contemporary
hip-hop dance show From Scratch. Chris has also danced in clubs
and for fashion shows but this is his first attempt at choreography with
such large numbers, a superb challenge. Credits for acting, directing and
writing however have been more numerous. Sadly, in order to persue the ultimate
dream (how cheesy) Chris leaves Edinburgh in the spring to find fresh pastures.
Rachel
Reynolds
- Producer
This is Rachel's first stab at producing; she says she likes to jump in
at the deep-end... Apparently she thought it would be less life threatening
than being on stage again, after she very nearly broke her neck every night
of Fame due to the fact she was on roller skates! She is in the
third year of a Social Anthropology degree, and has no idea what she will
do after that... Starlight Express? Methinks not!!
Anita
Henman
- Finanical Co-ordinator
Anita has been Productions Manager at Bedlam for a year (Easter '01 -'02).
She produced 2 by Miller at the Fringe '02 which got a 4 star review
by 3 weeks, and she is looking to continue a career as a TV Producer after
uni.
Graeme
Davies
- Executive Producer
Graeme has a problem! He appears to be unable to say no when an EU Footlights
committee ask him to produce a show. HAIR, however, will be the last! Probably!
Since producing Fame last year, Graeme has since graduated from Edinburgh
in Economics, helped to set-up and run a festival venue (The Smirnoff Underbelly)
and currently works as Development Officer for the Traverse Theatre. He
has also set up UXL Productions, whose next event is a charity ball in aid
of Leukaemia Research to be held in the Hilton Grosvenor on May 10th. For
more information please e-mail: Anna@UXLwithUXL.com.
